The **Group Three Exam**, titled **Gaseous Pollutants Instrumental Methods**, was first available in March 2005 and was most recently updated in 2021. ### Included Test Methods and Specifications This exam covers a variety of instrumental methods and performance specifications, including: * **EPA Test Methods:** Methods 1–4, 3A, 6C, 7E, 10, 10B, 19, 20, and 25A. Note that Methods 3A, 6C, 7E, 19, and 20 are specifically tested as revised on April 28, 2006. * **CEMS Performance Specifications (PS):** PS 2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 15. * **Part 75 Requirements:** Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) Relative Accuracy (RA) requirements of Part 75, including Appendices A, B, and E. * **Calibration Standards:** U.S. EPA Traceability Protocol for Assay and Certification of Gaseous Calibration Standards (Revised May 2012), specifically sections 2.1.1 through 2.1.3. * **Regulatory & Guidelines:** 40 CFR part 60.8(f), 40 CFR part 63.7(e)(3), and the SES Exam Guideline. ### General Principles and Implementation In addition to specific methods, candidates are tested on broader source testing knowledge required for all SES group exams: * **Fundamental Principles:** This includes sample transport and handling, proportional and representative sampling, and basic calculations. * **Implementation Skills:** Candidates must understand industrial process characteristics, regulatory requirements for air emissions compliance, and fundamental gas relationships (such as corrections for temperature, dilution, and moisture). * **Practical Application:** The exam addresses the suitability of test sites for accessibility, the verification of emissions calculations, the preparation of effective compliance reports, and the assessment of measurement data for process optimization. * **Regulatory Structure:** Questions may cover regulatory definitions and requirements for test plan preparation as outlined in 40 CFR parts 60 and 63. ### Exam Structure and Rules * **Format:** The exam consists of **50 questions**, and a passing grade requires at least **40 correct answers**. * **Validity:** A passing grade is valid for **five years**. * **Allowed Materials:** You may bring **printed reference materials**, such as copies of test methods, QA manuals, and hand-written procedural notes or calculation sheets. * **Calculators:** Personal calculators, mobile phones, and tablets are **prohibited**.
